“When it comes to Americans’ knowledge about Native American culture and history, one might say there are two types of people—those who know nothing about Natives, and those who know less than that”. The writer of that statement, who is from the Kickapoo Tribe, acknowledges his exaggeration, but contends that much of what mainstream Americans believe about Native Americans is based on inaccuracies and stereotypes. Inaccuracies about American Indians have been handed down through generations and perpetuated by media and popular culture, and unfortunately the media-induced assumptions and stereotyping begin in early childhood. Once instilled, these cultural biases are difficult to remedy—especially given the scarcity of authentic and accurate educational resources available to our nation’s teachers. In this project, Mountaintop Education Services, LLC, will address problems related to teaching and learning about Native Americans in elementary education, specifically in grades 3-5.
